Export market finder: which country to sell your product in first
Pick a product to see each country’s import size next to the replies Korean exporters actually got there, with the market to start with and the ones worth comparing.
For each country we look at the product’s imports (UN Comtrade, each country’s latest reported year), 3-year annual growth and Korea’s share. Replies come from an anonymous aggregate of 2,236,056 sales emails that 909 exporters sent through RINDA, compared within the product’s industry so that 1× is the industry average (products without an industry are compared with the overall average). Countries with few emails are pulled toward the average and shown with a 90% range. A recommended market is one where no other country is both larger and replies better. Markets that reply clearly below average and sanctioned countries are left out, and up to 4 are picked, proven ones first. The market to start with is the pick with the largest imports × reply multiple among those with proven replies from the same industry’s emails (or, if there are none, replies at or above average).
- Why isn’t the largest importer first? A big market where Korean exporters get few replies means sending far more emails before you meet your first buyer. So we look at import size and real replies together, and only recommend markets where no other country beats them on both. When a big market Korea already sells to is left out, the reason and its reply multiple appear below the results.
- What is the reply multiple compared with? It compares the reply rate Korean exporters in the same industry got in that country with that industry’s average reply rate. 1× is the industry average, and 2× means twice the replies from the same number of emails. Across all industries, an average of 7.0 in every 1,000 buyers contacted reply.
- How do I check a product that isn’t on the list? Enter its 4-digit HS code and we fetch UN trade data on the spot and show it the same way. The first time takes about 10 to 20 seconds. If the UN service hits its usage limit, growth or Korea’s share may be blank, or you may need to try again later. If you don’t know the code, look it up by product name in the HS code finder.
- What is a re-export hub? A place such as Singapore, Hong Kong or the Netherlands that ships part of what it imports on to other countries. Its import figure includes that share, so what actually sells locally is smaller than the import figure.
