HS code finder: the first 4 digits from a product name
Type a product name in any language to get the first 4 digits of its HS code and the product group, then go straight to export markets and a one-page plan for that code.
We look the name up in a dictionary of the 35 products TradeGraph keeps import data and reply records for (names and aliases), plus the usual codes for about 60 other common consumer products (such as kimchi 2005 and shampoo 3305). It understands names in 10 languages, including Korean, English and Japanese, and a 4-digit number is read as that code (check separately that the code exists). Because it matches on the words in the name, packaging, parts or ingredients can come back under the finished product’s code. Four digits are the broad product group: enough to choose markets, but the 6 to 10-digit tariff line used for export declarations and duty has to be set separately from the product’s material, use and packaging.
- Can I file an export declaration with the first 4 digits? No. The first 6 digits are the same worldwide, and the digits after that differ by country. Korea’s export declaration uses the 10-digit HSK line, and the importing country’s customs uses its own tariff line. Duty rates, origin rules and certification requirements also follow the tariff line, so confirm it in Korea Customs’ classification search or ask a customs broker.
- Can two cosmetics have different codes? Yes. Skin care, sunscreen and make-up are usually 3304, but hair products such as shampoo are 3305 and perfume is 3303. Liquid or cream face and body washes often fall under 3401. Food splits by form too: ginseng has different codes as a root, an extract, a preparation or a drink.
- What if the code is unclear? Apply for an advance classification ruling from Korea Customs to get an official answer. Importing countries have similar schemes, such as US CBP binding rulings and EU BTI. The same 6 digits should appear on the export declaration, the invoice, the certificate of origin and the buyer’s import entry, or FTA preference claims can run into trouble.
- Can I see export markets for products not on the list? Yes. For codes outside the 35 products, we fetch UN trade data on the spot and show import markets by country. The first time takes about 10 to 20 seconds.
