Find your price band and your edge before you list
Marketplace launch research means collecting a category’s best sellers, price band and low-star review complaints before you list, so you know where your product fits and what the listing should say. It is for consumer brands putting a product on Amazon or a local marketplace for the first time.
- 1. Pick the marketplaces: TradeGraph lists the marketplaces to look at first in that country and the data available for each (for the US: Amazon, TikTok Shop and Walmart). “Sales data price finder” shows, without sign-up, which data exists for each marketplace and what one call costs.
- 2. Collect competitors and reviews: Live data returns the Amazon best sellers and the top 20 competing listings with price, pack size, rating and review count, and the 1 to 3 star reviews of the top 5 are grouped by complaint. The estimate above assumes 30 product lookups; the estimated price is shown first, and only what you approve runs.
- 3. Check local search terms: Monthly search volume for 10 to 20 category keywords in the local language shows the words shoppers actually use. Each keyword costs under a cent; here too the estimated price is shown first, and only what you approve runs.
- 4. Find your place in the price band: From the collected prices you see the lowest, the median and the top-10 average, where your price lands and which pack sizes nobody sells. In “Export price calculator”, choose the marketplace channel to work out the shelf price from your FOB for free.
- 5. Draft the local listing: A keyword-first title, 5 bullets, a description and search terms are written in the local language with a back-translation. In the US the FDA regulates sunscreen as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug, and whitening claims are regulated in several markets, so a person checks that every claim is allowed there.
- 6. Make the image set (optional): The main image is your real product photo with only the background and exposure fixed (white for Amazon), and lifestyle and texture shots are made from that photo. A gallery plus ad sizes costs about $0.50, fee included; the estimated price is shown first, and any shot where the pack changed is thrown away.
- 7. Check what blocks a listing: Check what stops sellers going live: a genuine GS1 barcode, a trademark for brand registry, packaging EPR numbers for Germany and France, an EU responsible person and product safety information. For certificates and labels, continue with “Certification and label check before you sell”.
