Choose one market to start and one backup
Picking a first export market means weighing import size against how often buyers there actually replied to Korean exporters, then choosing one country to start and one backup. It is for export teams of one to three people going abroad for the first time or looking for their next market.
- 1. Find the HS code: Type the product name into “HS code finder” to get the 4-digit code the trade statistics use. Confirm the full 10-digit line, which sets the duty rate, with your buyer or customs broker.
- 2. Shortlist countries: “Export market finder” sets UN Comtrade import figures next to the reply rate in your industry, and keeps only countries where no other market is both larger and better at replying. Countries under sanctions or export controls are left out from the start.
- 3. Compare the candidates: Put 2 or 3 candidates in one table: import size, 3-year growth, Korea’s share, reply rate, and how certain that rate is. For recent Korean export figures, check the Korea Customs Service trade statistics or K-stat and note the month.
- 4. Check what blocks a sale: “Before-you-sell checklist” shows certification and registration, duty and FTA, trademark and first-order payment terms, each with its official source. If a registration is required before sale, someone on the team confirms it in the source, and that check comes before any buyer email.
- 5. Test the shelf price: Use “Export price calculator” to see what your FOB price becomes on a shelf there after freight, duty, channel margins and VAT. If it lands well above similar products, run the numbers again for another channel or the backup country.
- 6. Pick one market and a backup: The team picks the first market and a backup from the table and writes down what it gains and gives up in one sentence. The free export plan you get by typing a product name on the home page shows this comparison and recommendation on one page.
- 7. Set the 13-week plan: Send a first email to 200 buyers in week 1, then add new buyers every week. 200 emails bring only 1 to 3 replies, so you decide in week 13, once you have sent enough for about 10 replies.
